Really well done! Wouldn't be surprised if this wins or at least becomes one of the finalists.

KoTesKaMae responds:

Thank you!

I've seen every single entry so far and this is my favourite. I want it to win even more than I want my own entry to win.

RedVelvetDragon responds:

Oh my gosh, what!? I saw tons of entries and when I saw yours I loved it so much I was like "oh, this is definitely the winner". I'm glad you liked mine as well <3

Please put a wip image in the description, otherwise you'll be disqualified, and I don't want that!

Goldeneagle4170 responds:

Thanks.🙂

I love the style and the colour!

CarolART responds:

Thank you so much! :D

I've seen every single entry so far, and this idea with astronauts and space has popped up a lot. When I saw the thumbnail, I thought "O no, another astronaut!". But... I like it. It's my favourite astronaut so far. Nice work! I also love that you took inspiration from the new photo of a black hole. I was pretty excited when that came out!

thenightmarelife responds:

Thank you so much I appreciate it, I’m glad that my work is your favorite I can’t tell you how much that means to me! But yeah I love the picture of the black hole it’s what inspired me to do my idea in space.

Really nice rendering! The colours are a little too muddy for my taste, but that's just personal preference.
Love the little detail of the piece of chewing gum on the underside of the chair.

Inquissien responds:

I personally highly enjoy muddy color schemes, but as you already said that's just a preference. And thank you! The gum was added last minute because a friend of mine suggested it and I loved the idea.

Beautiful detail, texture and rendering. I love the subsurface scattering in the rose petal. I also love the emotion on her face, the tear and the red around the eye.

However, I feel like there's something wrong with the proportions even though I can't quite put my finger on it. I think the ribcage is too small for the head. It looks very top-heavy, especially with all the flowers on her head.

Otherwise, great piece!

LaurenWilson responds:

I too feel like she is a little top heavy sometimes. I think it might be that her hair is too big for her head, and there are a lot of flowers are in her hair as well, so that also brings a lot of weight to the top of her figure. I think the torso is correct, but the placement of the shirt in the front makes it look like the body cuts in more than it should, and thats probably because I need to practice more with clothing. Thank you for the critique, I will be keeping this in mind in my future paintings!

I feel you. One of my dreams is to perform on stage, but ironically, being watched by many people is my biggest fear.

I think a light like that would produce harder shadows with more defined edges, especially if it's the only light source. Also, is the light pure white? Maybe a little bit of colour could help emphasize the message (depending on the colour you choose).

The girl doesn't really look like she is about to cry. She just looks a bit uncomfortable. Most people only look at an image for a short time, so you want to make your point as clear as possible. Of course, when I zoom in, I can see the tears in her eyes, but take a step back and see if it's still easily readable! You might want to push the expression a bit. Make her look like she really is about to break down.

One last word about the title. I get the reference, but most people won't. For them it will just seem like the title has nothing to do with the image. They might even think it's supposed to be someone thinking about their girlfriend who left them.
If you want to use a song title, I recommend using one that also works as a title of the image even if you don't know the song. Something like "On My Own" from Les Mis or even "I'm not that girl" from Wicked (then it would also mean that the girl feels like she doesn't deserve to be there, which could be an interesting touch).
Those were examples of songs I like, but it goes without saying that for your artwork you have to choose a song you're into.

Anyway, enough criticism!
I wish you the best of luck not only with the competition but also with overcoming whatever might be holding you back from achieving your dreams.

PS: You know Shoshana Bean? She's a legend!

SashyBash responds:

Thanks, lighting and shadows are not my strong point because I'm not a fan of doing sharp lines but I am trying to get myself out of it. I did try a few experiments while making this picture but I wasn't happy with the way it looked so still got a lot to learn.

I choose to make her face to look mostly neutral from a distance trying to emphasise that people are good at putting on a "strong" face when if you look a little closer they're about to break. When I'm about to break and cry 90% of the time people around me, including friends, don't even notice even when I'm at the point of tears actually falling down my face. So for me this is a representation of how I look to others verses how I feel inside.

The title was because I made this image not only for the competition but also for a song cover I did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gExiPsiNZs&feature=youtu.be Which was the song that the image is titled. I was debating to call it something else that could be more fitting for the image when it's on it's own but the song that gave me inspiration for this resonated with me, especially recently where I feel as though I've lost my old self. It felt wrong to then call it something else. I don't mind if people don't get the reference, especially with a theme and song that lined up with my own feelings.

I really appreciate your feedback and criticism. I find it nice to see how my art looks from someone else's perspective and being able to find places I need to improve.

Thanks!

PS; I know right! She's awesome. :3

Hey! It's missing a link to a work in progress image. Make sure you add that, otherwise you will be disqualified!

MiyahH responds:

@JellicleJunkyard is that where I show I pic of me working on it?

Hehe, I spotted the Easter egg! (Not gonna say what it is so that others can still find it on their own)

Anyway, nice concept. I can totally relate. I like how the light directs the eye of the viewer, so you see the tablet first, then the character and then the people in the background. The image of her room has a really nice depth. Though it took me a few moments to realize that it was a tablet because it kinda looks like she's looking into a box. Maybe that's what you're going for, maybe you want to make it a little more obvious that it's on a flat surface.

I like the spot of light on the ground. But it doesn't have any meaning. In fact, it competes with the main focus of the girl sitting on the bed. My eyes are always drawn to this glowing white spot that doesn't really convey anything. Instead, you could use the light to emphasize the focal point. You could for example highlight the girl with it (then it should not be pure white, of course, because you wouldn't be able to see a thing) or use it in another clever way.

Anyway, good luck with the competition! (I'm planning to enter as well)

staronvenus responds:

Thank you for the in depth feedback! You are super healpful. I can see what you are pointing out too. I guess I could have made the light on the ground a bit less bright haha. Im not too used to doing backgrounds and such but this really does help me out. :D Also! At first I was going to just make it a box but I was recommended to make it look like a tablet. Maybe I should have stayed with my first option? It kinda does look silly hahha. Thank you again!
